During the summer he began reading law at home, and afterward read in his brother Joseph's office for a short time. In January, 1874, he went to Cleveland, Ohio, and attended one term of lectures at the law school of that city. He spent the following summer reading law, and was admitted at Mercer in September, 1874. Soon afterward he began practice with Griffith & Mason, with whom he remained till January, 1876.
