He attended the public schools of Perry Township, Mercer County, PA, New Lebanon Academy and Jamestown Academy, learning to be a telegraph operator at the last named school. He was been in charge of the station at Sandy Lake for over thirty-one years as agent and operator.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sandy Lake. He took much interest in Sunday school work and held the office of superintendent at Sandy Lake for a period of twenty years. He belonged to the Masonic order, being a member of the A. F. & A. M. and Knights and Ladies of Honor. In politics he voted the Republican ticket. He was the Republican nominee for the office of Prothonotary in Mercer County three different times. The second time he was defeated by a small majority. [HMC 1909, 846]
