He received a good common-school education, studied at Florence Academy, Washington County, Pennsylvania, for six years, and at the age of twenty-five commenced the study of medicine with Dr. James McCarell. He entered college at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1863, from which he graduated, commencing the practice of his profession in 1868.
