He obtained his educational training at the old stone district school No. 4, and also attended a private school at Monongahela City, Pennsylvania, after which he assisted with the work on the farm until the time of his marriage, when his father removed to Monongahela City, and the son thereafter was engaged in general farming, gardening and dairying on the home place.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a Republican in politics.
