He received his education at Phillips Academy, Andover, and at Kendall's School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, entering Amherst College, in 1877. He graduated from there in the class of 1881, and afterwards studied law at the Columbia Law School, New York city. After finishing his education, he traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, Northern Africa, Central America, Mexico, the West Indies and the Bermudas. In 1886, while on a trip abroad, he met his future wife.
