The head of the first family of that name that settled in Somerset township
He was born in England, came to America in 1750, and settled near the Brandywine battleground. In 1780 he came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Somerset township, on the farm on which Thomas McCorkle later lived. He had a family of eleven children, nine of whom lived to mature years. He was elected a justice of the peace in Somerset township, and he also represented the county two terms as a member of the Supreme Executive Council of the state. On his way home, at the close of his second term, he was taken with smallpox, and died at Hagerstown, Maryland.
