He and his wife were both of Irish parentage. They were the parents of six children, four of whom were still living in 1888.
John was their second child and oldest son.
He was a hatter for several years. In 1820 he came to Raccoon township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, purchased 130 acres of land, and settled down to farm life.
He held the office of justice of the peace for fifteen years.
