He was born on the family homestead in Hampton township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and remained on the farm until 1886, when he engaged in general mercantile business at Dehaven Station.
He held the office of school director of the township, and he and his family were members of the U. P. Church of Pine Creek.
