General Notes: Husband - John M. Miller

He remained at home until eighteen years of age, working on his father's farm, and then apprenticed himself to the carpenter's trade, but before completing his term of indenture the Civil War broke out and on September 22, 1862, he joined the army, becoming a member of Company H, One Hundred and Sixty-eighth Pennsylvania Infantry, with which he served for nine-months. He then re-enlisted in Company I, Eleventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, and continued with his command until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged, July 28, 1865. He was wounded on the third day of the engagement known as the Battle of the Wilderness. After being mustered out of the service Mr. Miller returned home. The following autumn his father died and he purchased the farm. This was a big undertaking for a young man without financial resources and he was advised by friends not to do so, but he possessed the spirit of courage and determination which is always found in the successful man, and made arrangements to take the property. For three years he and his brother Michael worked the farm together, one or the other being on the farm all of the time. One week John Miller would work at the carpenter's trade, while Michael remained on the farm and the following week they would change places. When three years had passed John M. Miller sold out to his brother and a year later he purchased the Funk farm in Sewickley township, where he remained, however, for only a year. He then purchased one hundred and thirty-seven acres where he resided and found that his land was underlaid with a heavy vein of coal, which was opened by the Madison coal works in 1890, he thereby securing a good financial return.
He was a leading member and generous supporter of the Lutheran church at Arona, gave the lot on which the house of worship was erected and contributed generously to the building fund. He served multiple terms as a member of the school board and the cause of education also found in him a friend. His political allegiance was given the Republican party.
