He was engaged on the river beginning when he was fourteen years of age, and was a captain and pilot for over thirty years. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church. He was an honorary member of the Masonic order.

He and his wife were the parents of five children, three living in 1888: two sons and one daughter.
