General Notes: Husband - James E. McFarland

When fourteen years of age he was apprenticed to his father's trade. In 1835 he went to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and established the Crawford Democrat, a paper which strongly advocated the election of George Wolf for governor. Later he purchased the Meadville Courier, which he consolidated with the Crawford Democrat, and during a period of twenty-five years published the united papers.
In 1840 he was appointed United States deputy marshal for Crawford County, and in 1845 was elected prothonotary, to which office he declined reelection. In 1848 he was the Democratic candidate for congress, and during the administration of Pierce and Buchanan served as postmaster of Meadville. In 1862 he entered the banking business, and in 1865 was one of the incorporators of the Merchants' National Bank at Meadville, of which institution he was elected president. Shortly after, upon a reorganization of the bank, he was elected cashier, which position he filled for eighteen years. He also served on the school board and city council of Mead-ville.
