He was born on the family homestead farm, was educated in the public schools, and upon the death of his father, he purchased the farm from the other heirs.
His family was connected with the United Presbyterian church of Centreville, and in politics, he was a Democrat. He is a member of the Farmers Alliance, and was a stockholder in the Centreville Creamery Company, and in Slippery Rock State Normal School.
