He was educated in various private schools and then attended for four years (three in the preparatory department and one in the college), the Western University of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, later the University of Pittsburgh. On May 31, 1877, he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a clerk in its treasury department at Pittsburgh where he continued for many years, his ability and his extensive knowledge of his special field of railroad financiering winning for him frequent promotion, until in 1891 he was made treasurer of the Pennsylvania system west of Pittsburgh. He was also a director in the People's Savings and Trust Company, the Monongahela National Bank, and the Dollar Savings Bank, all of Pittsburgh, and a member of the Duquesne Club, of Pittsburgh, and of the Allegheny Country Club and the Edgeworth Club of Sewickley, Allegheny County.
