The elder of his father's two sons, at the death of his father he came into possession of the family property. He was a millwright, a trade he followed all his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

With his first wife he had six daughters, all were deceased before 1889. With his second wife he had six children, of whom three were still living in 1889.
