After receiving his education in the common schools, he engaged in farming which he pursued until he removed to Paintersville, Pennsylvania, where he formed a partnership with a Mr. Stanton in the wholesale feed business which lasted for sixteen months. He then returned to his farm and resumed farming and stock-raising. He owned a farm of two hundred and fifty-four acres of first-class land which was well-improved and in a good state of cultivation. He was an active democrat, served as collector of taxes in 1889 and was re-elected in the spring of 1890.
He was a member of the Grange and Junior Order of United American Mechanics at Mendon.
