He was born in the Parish of Gershey, Four Towns of Knockgorm, County Down, Ireland. He sailed from Belfast, Ireland, April 2, 1819, landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he remained two years. At the end of that time he settled in Pittsburgh, where he engaged in the real estate business, meeting with a fair measure of success.

She was born in the town of Loughbrickland, County Down, Ireland, sailed from Belfast, May 28, 1818, and on July 26, of the same year, landed in Baltimore, Maryland. After remaining there four years she went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
