He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, with the Civil Engineer degree; he was commissioned second lieutenant of Company B, 304th Engineers of the first World War, and he was on the front lines throughout the war. He was later captain of the Engineers Reserve Corps. He was employed in the chief engineer's office of the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad.
