General Notes: Husband - Charles A. Steele

He was educated in the intermediate and high schools of Franklin, PA, and in earlier life was associated with his father in oil refining. Having pronounced dramatic talent he decided to abandon commercial life and make for himself a stage career. He rose rapidly in his profession, and in his seven years on the stage was associated with the supporting companies of leading players of that period, in well known and important roles. He played King Claudius and Laertes in “Hamlet,” Tybalt and Friar Laurence in “Romeo and Juliet,” Iago in “Othello,” Macduff in “Macbeth,” Marc Antony in “Cleopatra,” Bassanio in “The Merchant of Venice,” and other important Shakespearian characters. But his long and continual absences from home finally outweighed his love for his art, and he retired from the stage to a position as telegraph operator with the National Transit, a subsidiary branch of the Standard Oil Company. He remained with this company for ten years until elected treasurer of the city of Franklin in 1910. He also served his city on the board of water commissioners, and as councilman four years. He was an efficient official, and possessed the traits of character that distinguished his honored father. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and in political faith a Republican. [GPHAV, 910]
