He began his education in the common schools of Whitesville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and subsequently graduated from the Dayton Soldiers' Orphan School, of Pennsylvania, the Indiana State Normal, and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He was later engaged in the drug business in Punxsutawney.
