General Notes: Husband - Lewis Jesse Whann
He had a varied life. Lived on the home farm until 19 years of age, when he served as a lumber jack for one year in Pennsylvania woods; one year on a Kansas farm; one year on a cattle ranch in Indian Territory; drove a stage coach in Colorado from 1892 to 1894; prospected; baseball player, 1895 and 1896; joined Colorado National Guard and in 1896 went with the Guard to Cripple Creek in order to preserve order during a strike; returned to Cripple Creek in 1897 and worked for the Victor Gold Mining Co.; with the Colorado Guard when mustered into United States Service in the Spanish-American War, and on June 9, 1898 sailed on the steamship "China" for the Philippines; on July 4, stopped at Wake Island, where the American flag was "planted" by Col. Ben Lear (later a Lieutenant-General); landed in Manila July 18, and saw service in the Philippines until the summer of 1899 when the Colorado Regiment sailed for home via Japan where they spent several days at Yokohama and Tokia, arriving in San Francisco August 18, 1899, and was discharged September 8, 1899; made a short visit to Pennsylvania and on January 10, 1900 was married; elected constable of Cripple Creek in 1902 and was also elected 1st Lt. of Co. H. 2nd Col. Reg't, and a year later was elected Captain; worked for a number of years for several sugar companies, and from 1920 to 1937 with Paramount Pictures Corp., having charge of "flat, bin, and tool house." Retired in 1937.
