General Notes: Husband - Lyman B. Speir

He received his education at the common schools and at Meadville Academy and remained on the old homestead until 1859, which year he taught school. The years 1860 to 1862 he was engaged in the settlement of his father's estate and in 1863 he went to Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where he was engaged in the coal business one year. He next went to Warren County, Pennsylvania, and there engaged in the lumber trade for about six months, then returned to Greenville and for the next year and a half followed the grocery business. In the autumn of 1866 he engaged in the livery business which he successfully conducted until 1888. In that year he disposed of his business and was elected a member of the House of Representatives for Pennsylvania, serving two years. Among the important measures he assisted in trying to enact into a law, was that of a meat inspectorship for the state. The next business in which he embarked was that of livery in Youngstown, Ohio, which he conducted two years. In the spring of 1893 he returned to Greenville and again engaged in the livery business, which he followed until 1902, when his barn was burned. He then built a hotel on the lot, which was known as the "Hotel Speir," situated on Canal street, but his health failed and he was compelled to retire from a prosperous business. Mr. Speir always took an active part in furthering enterprises by which Greenville materially benefited, being among the men and one of the committee who secured the steel mills, also the tube works and Thiel College and in fact every industry which added to Greenville's prosperity. Politically, a stanch Republican, he served as member of the borough council two years and in other ways been an important factor of Greenville. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows lodge for forty-two years, and was a worthy member of Alhambra Lodge No. 293, of which he was noble Grand.
