At the age of sixteen he became salesman in a general store at Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and after remaining there a short time secured a position in the Pittsburgh postoffice, where he came in time to occupy an important place. After remaining several years he resigned in order to accept a position in the office of the auditor of the Pennsylvania railroad, a position in which he served during the remainder of his life.
