He was reared in Shenango township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and when sixteen years, of age ran away from home, and enlisted in Co. K, 50th Reg. Pa. Vol. Inf., serving nine months until the close of the war, and taking part in the battles of Hatcher's Run, Petersburg, and Ft. Steadman.
