He had the advantages of the public schools and went to work for J. C. Cross, of Sandy Lake, in the undertaking business, where he remained for twelve years. He then went to North Platte, Nebraska, being employed there three years, then returned east to Mercer, Pennsylvania, and there took charge of McKean, Hirst & Sykes' undertaking establishment, which he conducted nine months, and in 1893 returned to Sandy Lake and purchased the establishment of J. L. Cross. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Keystone Club of Sandy Lake and Lake Lodge No. 434, F. & A. M. Politically, he was a supporter of the Democratic Party and was a member of the Sandy Lake council several terms. [HMC 1909, 851]
