He was educated in the common schools, and in the Blairsville Academy. He read medicine with his brother, James McMullen, M. D. and graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in 1856, taking his first course in the session of 1852-3. His first location was at Bell's Mills, Black-lick township, Indiana County, in June, 1853, where he remained a year and a half. His next location was in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, and after a stay of five months, returned to Mechanicsburg, locating in 1857, in Greenville. His practice extended about ten miles from the village. He served in the state house of representatives in the sessions of 1871-72.
