He was reared in Wayne Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. His educational training was acquired in the Mt. Hope, the Ellwood City High School, and the Hopedale schools, after which he turned his attention to farming, and began cultivating the home place.
He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church at Slippery Rock. Politically he adhered to the principles of Democracy.
