He was born in Nunda, Livingston County, New York, and settled in Warren County, Pennsylvania, as a teacher in 1849. He taught several years, and embarked in the general mercantile trade in 1857, which he continued until 1868, when he sold out on account of impaired health, and took up engineering. During the Civil War he was active in the employ of the government in the purchase of stock.
