General Notes: Husband - Joseph B. Mechling

He was educated in the public school, and at Butler Academy, read law with L. Z. Mitchell, was admitted to the bar in 1863, and practiced his profession for a number of years. In April, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Thirteenth Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served three months. He then re-enlisted in Company H, Seventy-eighth regiment, was elected first lieutenant, and served in that command two years. He was for many years identified with the public schools of Butler, as a teacher and superintendent of the borough schools, and was always interested in the advancement of education. Politically, he was a Republican, and though he never sought public office, he was deeply interested in the successes of his party. He resided on a farm in Butler township, and was recognized as an intelligent, progressive citizen.
