At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army on 9 October 1861 at Emlenton, Pennsylvania. He was mustered into Company L, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was admitted to the hospital on 2 April 1862 for small pox and died four months later.
