He was reared on the old Park homestead in Metal township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and educated in the public schools. He became a farmer on the home farm. In politics he was a Democrat, and served as township auditor and on the election board of Metal township. He was a member of the Lower Path Valley Presbyterian Church.
