General Notes: Husband - John Willison Witherspoon

He was educated in the public schools and at the Chambersburg Academy. After leaving school he assisted his father, until, in 1864, he enlisted in the United States Signal Corps, serving in the valley of Virginia. He was on duty with the middle military division under Gens. Sigel, Hunter and Sheridan, and he participated in the battles of Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, and was mustered out at Winchester, Virginia, in August, 1865. After the Civil war, he was for three terms a teacher in the public schools. In 1868 he went to West Virginia, where he engaged in farming for six years. He returned to Guilford township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1874, and then was a farmer on the farm of his father and grandfather, which he owned. In politics he was a Republican, and he was for nine years a school director for Guilford township and a County Commissioner, 1887-90, and was also assessor. On Nov. 8, 1904, he was elected to represent his district in the State Legislature. He was a member of Housum Post, No. 309, G. A. R., and of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church.
