General Notes: Husband - John Wiley Miller

A United States Indian agent in New Mexico.

He came from Pennsylvania and went to Kansas, ten years prior to the building of a railroad in that part of the country. His brother Will, first agent to the Navahos, was shot in a tent with the Navahos and Utes each blaming the other for the shooting. After a visit east Mr. Miller ran the Santa Fe stage station and when it stopped operating started a trading post at Jemez Pueblo where he met his wife.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Lodisa Stright

Like many of the Strights, she was a teacher. She received her training at the Edinboro State Normal School although she taught school before going to Normal School. Through the influence of Miss Isabelle Rhuhama Leach, her teacher at Clark's Mills, Pennsylvania, she went to New Mexico in 1882 as a missionary of the Presbyterian church. Miss Leach married a medical missionary, Dr. John Milton Shields, a former medic in the Union army whose two former wives had died. Mrs. Shields died of pneumonia on March 26, 1900 when their five living children were quite small, ages 5 to 11. "Aunt Mary" helped care for the children after the death of Mrs. Shields. Several years later when "Aunt Mary" was ill a daughter of Mrs. Shields (Helen Belle) helped care for her. In 1894 when Aunt Mary married John Wiley Miller he was in charge of the trading post at Jemez Pueblo, at that time with a population of about 500. They were married at the Presbyterian Church at Jemez Springs which still stands. The ceremony took place the day before Christmas on the occasion of a Christmas entertainment. Half way through the ceremony a Mexican woman exclaimed "That's a true wedding."
