General Notes: Husband - Daniel Turney

The Dorneys, probably Huguenots, emigrated from Holland to eastern Pennsylvania.

His father was a native of Germany, emigrated to America and settled in eastern Pennsylvania, probably before the middle of the eighteenth century. His name was Dorney, but like many other names, it has undergone a change, and came to be spelled Turney.

He was one of a large family of children, three or four brothers of which left their home in eastern Pennsylvania at about the same time. One of them settled in Ohio, where his descendants became numerous; another in Tennessee, where he raised a large family, one of his descendants being Chief Justice Turney of that state. Another of the brothers went to North Carolina, and permanently located there, where the Turney name designated quite extensive families.

He and his wife were born in eastern Pennsylvania. They moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and located near Hannastown, two miles northeast of Greensburg, when their daughter Elizabeth was an infant of a few weeks. He was a farmer, the father of eight children, six sons and two daughters.
He and his wife are buried in the cemetery on the bank of the Youghiogheny river.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret Miller

Some early tombstones bear odd and interesting epitaphs. One of them is as follows: “Margaret, consort of Michael Mechling and formerly widow of Daniel Torney, Sr., near Greensburg, Westmoreland county, Pa., who died Sept. 14, 1829, in the 70th year of her age. She left eleven children, 55 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren of the Torney family. Peace be with her ashes.” [HAC 1914, 119]
