He was with John Brown.

He was a graduate of Oberlin College, Ohio, and was principal of the Indiana, Pennsylvania, Academy, for several sessions. He went to Kansas, and participated in all the early troubles of that state. He was one of the party of seventeen, captured by the notorious Fred. Emery, and taken to Lecompton, where they were rescued by Gen. James Lane. He was one of the party of four who recaptured Dr. Dory, confined in the St. Joseph, Missouri, jail, for aiding in the escape of slaves.
