General Notes: Husband - Michael L. Zahniser

He was educated in the common schools and was brought up at rural pursuits. In 1864 he was employed as a clerk by the firm of North & Zahniser, general merchants at North's Mills. This he continued for two years, and then, in partnership with his father, started the first store at Jackson Centre, this being in 1866. They continued here for two years with good results, and then sold, and he, with his brother-in-law, Balliet, opened a hardware store at Sandy Lake. In 1873, when the bank was established, he was elected its first cashier, and filled that position until 1880, when he retired from the bank and became interested in the clothing business. In 1884 he resumed his old position in the bank. He became a director of the bank; was a member of the K. and L. of H.; he and wife belonged to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and he was a Republican. [HMC 1888, 1070]

Early in life he left the farm to enter mercantile pursuits, locating successively at North's Mills, Jackson Centre, Perrine's Corners and Sandy Lake. At the latter place and at Stoneboro, PA, he engaged in banking till 1891. His present residence is at Pittsburgh, PA, where he is engaged in the production of oil. He has always been active in the religious and philanthropic work. He was the organizer and teacher of a Bible Class of more than 200 members in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Shady avenue, Pittsburgh.
