He was with Edward S. Whelen & Co., bankers, until the beginning of the Civil War, when he entered the service of the U. S.; was Colonel of Fourth Penna. Reserves, and made Brevet Brigadier General for gallant and meritorious services; was killed at the battle of Cloyd's Mountain, Virginia.
