General Notes: Husband - Thomas B. Monks

He served as a captain in the Union army during the Civil war, being in charge of Company C, 62d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, but after two years was obliged to resign on account of failing health. After recovering his health he became a contractor, and later a merchant. Subsequently he was made cashier of the bank at Tidioute, Pennsylvania, and while occupying that position was appointed postmaster. He also served as deputy sheriff. Having studied civil engineering in his youth, he put his knowledge of that profession to use throughout his life. When death claimed him, he was a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, dying from the results of a fall while he was superintending some work for which he had a contract.

A merchant of Warren County, Pennsylvania; appointed postmaster by President Grant; and cashier of the People's Savings Bank.
