He was educated in the Chambersburg High School and at the Chambersburg Academy. He studied medicine with his father, and was graduated M. D. at the Medico-Chirurgical College, Philadelphia, May 31, 1898. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he was appointed assistant surgeon, U. S. A.; he first served at the Red Cross Hospital at Camp Meade, near Middletown, Pennsylvania, and was afterward sent to Summerville, South Carolina, Augusta, Georgia, Tampa, Florida, and Cuba. After his return to his home he practiced medicine in Chambersburg in partnership with his brother, Dr. P. Brough Montgomery. He was a member of George Washington Lodge, No. 143, F. & A. M., and of various medical societies.
