He was a native of County Derry, Ireland, and immi­grated to Pennsylvania in 1831, and settled in Pine township, Allegheny County, where his son Samuel had preceded him. He subsequently removed to West Deer township, settling close to the Butler County line, where he purchased 100 acres of land and spent the remaining years of his life thereon. He was an early member of Pine Creek United Presbyterian church.
