Dr. Sumner, 80, dies, delivered 5,000 babies
Often referred to as "the baby doctor," Dr. Harold R. Sumner, 80, a physician who practiced medicine in Ellwood City for 50 years before retiring, died yesterday, Feb. 19, 1987, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, N. C.
Dr. Sumner had been residing in Winston-Salem since March, 1985, when he moved to Meadowbrook Terrace, a retirement home there. In September, 1985, he moved to Winston-Salem Convalescent Center.
He was born Dec. 30, 1906, in Ellwood City to the late Harris and Mae Sumner and had been married for 50 years to the former Mary Elizabeth Minteer who preceded him in death. A brother, Lawrence E. Sumner, also preceded him in death.
Following his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Dr. Sumner established his practice in Ellwood City. For some 35 years of his 50 years in practice he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and delivered over 5,000 babies to families in the Ellwood City area.
Dr. Sumner was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church and was a past president of the Lawrence County Medical Society. He also belonged to Ellwood City Kiwanis Club, Connoquenessing Country Club and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. William L. Sumner and his wife, Cheryl, of Pittsburgh and Dr. Thomas E. Sumner and his wife, Elisa, of Winston-Salem. There are also two grandchildren, Betsy and Ricky of Winston-Salem.
Dr. William Sumner is an associate professor in the School of Health Related Professions and Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Thomas Sumner is a professor of radiology and pediatrics at Bowman Gray Medical School, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Harold J. Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Ave.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Hines, pastor of Calvin church, in charge. Entombment will be in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church Cemetery Mausoleum.
