When his father was elected register and recorder, he became clerk in his office, and continued till 1864, when he entered Jefferson College, at Canonsburg. He was graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with the class of 1867. Immediately upon his graduation he went west, and engaged in railroading, and soon worked up to the position of conductor. He resigned in 1869, returned to his native town, studied law under S. B. Wilson, and was admitted to the bar in 1871. He then went to Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he practiced for a few months. In March, 1873, he removed to Butler County, where he practiced his profession till the close of 1875. He then returned to Beaver County. In 1880 he was elected district attorney for the county, and served three years. Following this he was successfully engaged in the practice of his profession in connection with his brother, Winfield S.
He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and he was a trustee and a teacher in the Sabbath-school. In politics he was a Republican.
