General Notes: Husband - John M. Snowden

He was associate lay judge of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, from 1840 to 1845. He was born at Philadelphia, and after learning the trade of a printer, removed to Greensburg in 1798, where he established the Farmers' Register, this being the second journalistic venture in western Pennsylvania. He removed to Pittsburgh in 1811, where he published the Commonwealth and Mercury. He was mayor of the city at various times, county recorder, director of the Bank of Pittsburgh, and was widely known as a leading citizen of the county. He died suddenly in the second term of his judicial incumbency.

He was judge of the court of common pleas, appointed April 16, 1840, and reappointed or commissioned March 31, 1841. He was one of the original directors in the Bank of Pittsburgh, the first to be granted a charter in the city, the date being 1814. Judge Snowden was also mayor of Pittsburgh at one time. He was a native of Philadelphia and a man of much influence.

Snowden township was named in his honor.
