At the age of ten years he went to live with his grandfather, Samuel Eakin, where he resided seventeen years. In 1839, in connection with his brother Samuel, he purchased two hundred acres of land on the line of Clinton and Scrubgrass townships, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and lived there the rest of his life. Politically he was a Republican, and a life-long member of the United Presbyterian church.
