He followed farming in Washington and Allegheny coun-ties, Pennsylvania, and in 1872 came to Greene township, Beaver County, where he had a farm of 101 acres. They were members of the United Presbyterian church. He was a Prohibitionist.

He and his wife had four children, only one of whom was still living in 1888.
