He was born in Hancock County, West Virginia, and during his early life attended the common schools of the district. At the age of eighteen years he entered the normal school at Fairmount, where he remained two years, and he afterward began teaching, in which vocation he continued three years. He then came to Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and entered the boot and shoe business, the firm also carrying hats and caps. He was an active worker in the ranks of the Democratic party, served as auditor of Burgettstown, and filled the offices of secretary and treasurer of the borough.
