General Notes: Husband - John MacDonald Townsend

Robert T. Townsend was president and general manager of Townsend Company; John M. Townsend was vice-president; Vincent L. Bradford (Townsend), secretary and treasurer; Arthur C. Townsend, mill manager. The business thus conducted operated the first wire mill to be established west of the Allegheny Mountains. An old directory of the City of Pittsburgh (at that time a small town) refers to the Townsend Wire Mill as one "from whence the great valley of the middle West is supplied." Besides wire-rivets and wire-nails, various wire products are made, and the output has grown to large proportions.

After attending the public schools of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, he prepared for college. He entered the University of Michigan, whence he was graduated in the class of 1910 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts.
His education completed, he quite naturally followed the family bent by identifying himself with the Townsend manufacturing interests. He became associated with his father, who assigned him to a position in the sales department. He made himself conversant with the details of that division of the business and also familiarized himself with other matters so as to become equipped for fulfilling the duties of advanced positions. Ten years after his father's death the concern passed the one-hundredth year of its existence, and the company was incorporated under the laws of the State of Pennsylvania, the style being changed to Townsend Company, and John M. Townsend becoming the vice-president.
Mr. Townsend was a Republican in his political alliance, and he was president of the School Board at Patterson Heights for twelve years.
Mr. Townsend was a member of the Beaver Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Loyal Legion, the Rotary Club of Beaver Valley and the Beaver Valley Country Club. He and his family were communicants of the First Presbyterian Church.
