General Notes: Husband - Edward Bayly Neely

He was born at "The Hermitage," the home of his maternal ancestors, in Accomac County, on the eastern shore of Virginia. The Neely family moved to Washington, D. C., where the greater part of his boyhood was spent. At the age of 17, he entered the Junior Class of Washington College at Washington, Pennsylvania, from which institution he graduated with high honors in 1847. While in college he was a classmate of James G. Blaine, and remained his close friend always. Immediately after graduating he took up the profession of teaching, was first an assistant in Warfield Academy, Howard County, Maryland; then for two years he taught in a private school which he had established in Onancook County, Virginia. In 1850 he was chosen principal of Margaret Academy, Accomac County, Virginia. In 1855 he resigned his position in Margaret Academy and removed to St. Joseph, Missouri, making the journey from Pittsburgh by steamboat. Shortly after arrival in St. Joseph he, with Mr. Maxwell, established the St. Joseph Male Academy and continued in the management of it until 1864. On August 12th, 1864, Mr. Neely was elected Superintendent of Public Schools of St. Joseph, and continued to hold that position for forty years, to the time of his death, and in point of continuous service, E. B. Neely was the oldest school superintendent in the United States. He served for six years on the Board of Free Public Libraries, was a member of the Board of Regents of the State Normal School, and was elected its president for four successive terms. For six and one-half years he was Superintendent of schools in Buchanan County and then declined to be re-elected.
