General Notes: Husband - Edgar Hayes Negley

After passing with credit through the elementary and high schools of Butler, Pennsylvania, he read law under the preceptorship of Judge Ebenezer Junkin, and was admitted to the bar, March 13, 1899. He began in active practice at that time, but prior to the Spanish-American War he was a reporter. For fifteen years he was a member of the Butler Volunteer Fire Department, and for ten years ran on the champion racing team of the First Ward Hose Company. He was the secretary and manager of the Butler Publishing Company, which published the Clean Commonwealth, which was started in 1909. In political matters he was a Prohibitionist, and served as auditor of the borough, and was a member of the school board from 1906 to 1909. During the Spanish-American War he was a member of Company E, Fifteenth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, serving from April 27, 1898, to September 19 of that year. He was a member of Butler Camp, No. 33, United Spanish War Veterans, and thrice was elected judge advocate of the Department of Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the Captain Edwin Lyon Camp, Sons of Veterans. His religious affiliation was with the Grace Lutheran Church.

He was educated in the public grammar and high schools of his native city, graduating from both. He then commenced reading law with Judge Ebenezer M'Junkin and with the firm of M'Junkin and Galbreath, consisting of James Bredin M'Junkin and James M. Galbreath, the latter later elevated to the bench. His legal studies were begun, January 1, 1897, and continued for slightly more than two years, his admission to the bar taking place in March, 1899. Subsequently, he was also admitted to practice in the Supreme and Superior courts of Pennsylvania and in the several courts of the United States. He was thereafter continuously engaged in the practice of his profession. During the time he studied law and for a few years afterwards he was a reporter for several newspapers, and he was also interested in real estate. In politics, he was a supporter of the Republican Party, and served his native city as city auditor and as school director.
He was a member of the Butler Board of Commerce; the Young Men's Christian Association; and the Butler County Historical Society, of which latter he was chairman of its board of governors. His religious affiliations were with the Lutheran Church and more particularly with Grace Lutheran Church of Butler.
