He learned the blacksmith's trade at an early age with his brother John, and continued to follow that occupa­tion in Greenville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, until his removal to Sligo in 1879. There he purchased the furniture and un­dertaking establishment of Charles McCafferty, but after conducting it for two years he was forced to sell to his son David on account of failing health.
