As a youth, he emi­grated to California and located in the city of Stockton, where he became a prominent broker and banker, and where he became a large real estate owner, being the possessor of eight hun­dred acres of land, on which he raised grapes, his first year's shipment of that fruit totalling seventy-five tons. He was postmaster at Stockton for nine years, and for one term was a member of the California legislature.
